Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for Clinical Social Workers is an eight-week educational program that enables you to explore a wide variety of mindfulness practices in a supported setting with other clinicians. Research has demonstrated that MBSR has measurable benefits including reducing stress, fostering emotional regulation and promoting well-being. This structured, sequential program provides a foundation for a personal practice of mindfulness that can enhance your resilience, while helping you develop an experiential foundation for integrating mindfulness-based approaches into your professional practice.

The program includes an orientation session to help you determine whether MBSR is right for you. Weekly 2.5 hour classes introduce you to mindfulness through guided experiential practices, and you have the opportunity to share the successes and challenges you encounter in integrating mindfulness into your daily life with other group members. A full day retreat enables you to take a deeper dive into mindfulness as a practice of self-care.

MBSR is widely used as a stress reduction intervention for health and mental health professionals and their clients around the world. Research is increasingly suggesting that mindfulness practice can deepen your ability to be present, responsive and skillful in your clinical work, as well as enhancing your personal well-being. Whether you are exploring mindfulness for the first time, or looking for a program to support or expand your developing practice, MBSR has much to offer.

About the Facilitators
(Lead Instructor) Annemarie Gockel, M.S.W., Ph.D., LICSW, SEP, is an associate professor of social work at Smith College School for Social Work. She conducts research on mindfulness in clinical education and community-based intervention, and integrates mindfulness into her teaching and clinical practice. Gockel has had an ongoing personal practice of mindfulness for more than ten years. She trained in MBSR at the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness. She teaches mindfulness at Smith and at local community health and social service organizations.

(Co-Instructor) John Meiklejohn, L.I.C.S.W., B.C.D., John is now retired from a 30-year private practice of psychotherapy for adults, teens and children. Authorized to teach MBSR by the Ctr. for Mindfulness in Worcester, Massachusetts, he has led the 8-week MBSR program numerous times at the Genesis Ctr. in Westfield and at Baystate Medical Ctr. He is currently a leader and coordinator of the Westfield Mindfulness Meditation Group that meets at the Genesis Ctr. For the past 3 years, he’s been the volunteer coordinator of the Westfield School District’s ‘Inner Explorer’ Program, a mindful-based social/emotional learning program for K-12 students and teachers. He offers orientation training sessions on Inner Explorer for educators and school administrators in local school districts
