SUMMARY:2025 Annual West Region Self Advocacy Conference
DESCRIPTION:Massachusetts West Region Self Advocacy is elated to invite you to celebrate and reflect with us at our2025 Annual West Region Self Advocacy Conference! The event will be held Saturday\, May 31\, 2025 at the Sheraton Monarch Place Hotel in Springfield\, MA.\n\nSelf advocacy is an international civil rights movement started by and for people with disabilities. For over 40 years in Western Massachusetts\, self advocates have added to the richness of our community by recognizing a need for change and calling for action. The Annual West Region Self Advocacy Conference was created to further these meaningful pursuits by facilitating collaboration and community. For two decades self advocates from across New England have come together at the conference to share knowledge\, stories\, collaborate to create change\, and recognize one another’s efforts and accomplishments.\n\nThis year is especially meaningful for our community as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Massachusetts West Region Self Advocacy! This is a powerful opportunity to celebrate and reflect on our victories over the past three decades. Every year we select a theme based on the ideals of our movement; this year we are proud to highlight The Legacy of Self Advocacy: Past\, Present\, and Future. Every day we build on the accomplishments of our past and move forward towards an inclusive and equitable world for everyone.\nWe must acknowledge that even on the brink of this milestone anniversary\, self advocates are actively facing new challenges in today’s world. The conference remains an important time to come together and harness the collective energy\, wisdom\, and passion of our community. We know that when people work together\, revolutionary things happen.

SUMMARY:Voices\, Visions & Unusual Beliefs: Innovative Support Strategies
DESCRIPTION:March 18 to March 20\, 2024\, 9am to 5pm\n@ Holyoke Community College\, Holyoke\, MA \nIn current Western medical paradigms\, hearing voices is often a deeply marginalized experience. Those who hear voices and/or see visions are typically given a poor prognosis. Suggested coping strategies tend to be limited to distraction techniques or heavy neuroleptics. Clinicians\, voice-hearers\, and family members have often felt frustrated by the limitations of this model. \nAnother world is possible. This training is for anyone who is interested in learning the current research\, strategies and supports that are being developed by people with lived experience of voice-hearing world-wide. \nWe will explore: \n▪ How trauma\, culture and social factors influence voice-hearing\n▪ Common myths about voices & visions and how to shift these paradigms\n▪ A new dialogue framework to discuss non-consensus reality states in a supportive way\n▪ Dozens of real-life strategies that are used by voice-hearers to cope with a distressing experience \n\n\n\n▪\nHow trauma\, culture and social factors influence voice-hearing\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n▪\nCommon myths about voices & visions and how to shift these paradigms\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n▪\nA new dialogue framework to discuss non-consensus reality states in a supportive way\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n▪\nDozens of real-life strategies that are used by voice-hearers to cope with a distressing experience\n\n\n\nThis event will be co-facilitated by Cindy Marty Hadge and Caroline Mazel-Carlton\, both of whom have extensive personal experience with voices\, visions\, and navigating the psychiatric system. Both have well over a decade of professional experience supporting other voice-hearers in community settings\, clinical environments and online. Caroline and Cindy have had the privilege of both learning from and supporting system change in the international community\, from the Netherlands to Brazil to Israel to Australia. Their work has been featured in mainstream media outlets\, academic articles\, and books\, including the most recent work from NYT best-selling author Daniel Bergner\, “The Mind and the Moon”. \nContinuing Education information: This program has been approved for 18.5 Social Work Continuing Education hours for relicensure\, in accordance with 258 CMR. NASW-MA Chapter CE Approving Program\, Authorization Number D 91991. This program has been approved by MaMHCA/MCEAP for 18.5 CEs for LMHC. SUMMARY:As Prescribed: Film Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:‘As Prescribed’ is an award winning film by Holly Hardman about the damage being done to so many people across the globe without informed consent.\nFrom the film’s website: Xanax\, Klonopin\, Valium\, Ativan – all belong to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines (benzos). News and entertainment media portray them in terms of addiction and abuse or as innocuous medications that relax nerves. \nAs Prescribed documents a strikingly different narrative\, following eye-opening stories of invisible illness and disability. Boston-based survivor Geraldine Burns leads a grassroots army of “good patients” that help other victims and advocate tirelessly for benzodiazepine harm awareness. But resistance is strong. Geraldine and her cohorts are opposed by powerful forces that include pharmaceutical giants and a medical culture that has denied the problem for decades. \nOnline: Wednesday\, February 21\n6pm Eastern—Watch the film (95 minutes) \n8pm Eastern—Panel discussion featuring: \n▪ Sonja Styblo\n▪ Geraldine Burns\n▪ Zoe Savage \n\n\n\n▪\nSonja Styblo\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n▪\nGeraldine Burns\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n▪\nZoe Savage\n\n\n\nModerated by Cindy Hadge \nRegister and have the option to watch on your own or as a group on the 21st!
